Library services

Hikurangi Library provides and promotes a library service which fills the needs of the whole community.

The range of books includes educational, reference, hobbyist and children's. A  Book Week is held at the end of June every year.

Photocopying and internet facilities are also available.

History

Hikurangi Library was formed by Friendship House at the old Council Chambers in Alfred Street in 1981, beginning with a monthly exchange from the Whangarei Public Library of 50 books.

With books gifted, (50 large print books form the Hikurangi Red Cross) and an increase in books loaned from the Whangarei Public Library, the Friendship House (then in the foyer of the Memorial Hall) soon ran out of room.
In 1992 Whangarei District Council granted permission for the library to use the meeting room in the old Courthouse.

When the Hikurangi Post Office closed in December 1992 Friendship House Trust made an application to the ASB Community Trust for funding to buy the Post Office Building as a permanent home for the library. The application was granted and the library has a permanent home.

Friendship House owns the building, and the library is run by a sub-committee of Friendship House. The library now owns more than 8,000 books and is managed by volunteers. Books continue to be borrowed regularly from the Whangarei District Council Library service.

The residence at the back of the library is rented to a family by the Friendship House Trust.
