You could search the web . . . or find it in Ebook Central (formerly ebrary)

Whether looking for fun, doing study projects for school or tertiary courses, learning how to cook or taking care of your dog, Ebook Central has innovative technology that makes the research process quick and efficient.

You can use Ebook Central on your computer or mobile device (Apple or Android) to read eBooks online or download all or just the parts of the book you need.

You can search by title, keyword, author or browse by subject or table of contents.

These books can be accessed anytime and anywhere you have an internet connection.

To use Ebook Central you will need

  • to be a current member of Whangarei District Libraries with a valid library card number and PIN.
    Please note: Library membership expires every 2 years when you will need to contact us to update your membership details.

  • Internet access

  • a compatible device with software or an app for downloading and reading eBooks.
    See below.

    Please note: Amazon Kindle eReaders are generally not a compatible device for reading library eBooks in New Zealand.

  • an Adobe ID to authorise your devices for reading eBooks with DRM copyright protection.

Note: To use Ebook Central on all your devices you will need an Adobe account:

Create an Adobe account

  • Conduct a simple or advanced search that can be narrowed by publication year, relevance, subject, and other parameters. Search for exact phrases by putting them in quotations
    (e.g. “growing vegetables”).

  • Select the title to enter a landing page that provides key information about the ebook including a description, download availability and copy and print allowances.

  • Open the ebook and navigate by scrolling or flipping through pages. Search for keywords within the ebook and jump to relevant chapters.

  • Take notes, highlight text and bookmark pages, all of which are stored on your bookshelf.
    Create a proper citation in your choice of format. Citations are automatically created when you copy and paste text and print pages and chapters to PDF.

  • Manage research in your bookshelf with folders and other tools. Share ebooks and folders with peers.

  • Download ebooks or specific chapters to use offline.

  • Enjoy ebooks on-the-go on any mobile device with the independent Bluefire Reader.

Downloading Ebook Central eBooks

There are 2 options for downloading Ebook Central eBooks:

  • a specific chapter or page range as a pdf file

  • the entire document as an eBook

To download the entire eBook onto your computer and devices you will need to have installed Adobe Digital Editions onto your PC or laptop.
