Nove-L on smart phone. Borrow eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines from OverDrive and Libby

Nove-L (Northern Virtual e-Library) is a collaborative venture between several public libraries in the upper North Island of New Zealand, using OverDrive.

Through Nove-L on the OverDrive website and Libby apps you can download eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines onto your computer and mobile devices to read or listen to anywhere at anytime. Includes fiction and non fiction titles for adults, teens and children.

To use OverDrive and Libby you will need:

  • to be a current member of Whangarei District Libraries with a valid library card number and PIN.

    Please note: Library membership expires every
    2 years when you will need to contact us to update your membership details.

  • Internet access

  • a compatible device with software or an app for downloading and reading eBooks or listening to eAudiobooks

    Please note: Amazon Kindle eReaders are generally not a compatible device for reading library eBooks in New Zealand.

  • an Adobe ID to authorise your devices for reading eBooks with DRM copyright protection.

Get the OverDrive app to read eBooks for older devices or if you use special software to support your vision when reading.

To be able to download and read eBooks on your mobile device you will need to authorise or activate the device using Adobe Digital Editions and your Adobe ID. You can you can create an Adobe ID from within OverDrive app.

Using OverDrive/Nove-L website

Go to the Nove-L website sign in using your library card and pin number.

You can also search, preview and borrow OverDrive eBooks and eAudiobooks through the library catalogue.

Whangarei District Libraries Catalogue

  • To search for eBooks, select Digital Library from the drop down menu next to the Home icon.

  • To view a sample of an eBook, click the Preview button and follow the on-screen directions.

  • You can easily download eBooks by clicking the Download button.

  • A window will appear and ask you to select an eBook reader or format. Select your preferred reader or format and the eBook will begin to download.

The eBook is added to your Bookshelf on the Nove-L website or OverDrive app. Go to either the website or app, open your Bookshelf to read or transfer the eBook.


On the OverDrive/Nove-L website find magazines under the Subjects tab or search the magazine title:

In the Libby app, to find magazines tap  Explore > What's New > New in Magazines, or search the magazine title.

Using OverDrive and Libby

  • Check Outs: 4 titles can be checked out at the same time
  • Holds: Only 4 titles can be placed on hold at the same time
  • Lending periods: There is a choice of lending periods: 7, 14 or 21 days.
    Use 7 days particularly for audiobooks if you know you will have finished it within a week.
  • Renewals: The option to renew a title becomes available three days before the title is set to expire (if there are no holds on it), appearing next to the title on your Bookshelf under your library Account. You can only use the renew feature once for each checkout. 
  • Return items early: eBooks and eAudiobooks can be returned early using the app on your device.
  • eMagazines: There are no checkout limits on eMagazines, so you can borrow as many as you like. They are also continuously available with up to 3 years of back issues on some eMagazine titles.
