Babies and preschooler’s programmes
Mums, dads and random grownups, bring your preschoolers and babies to our weekly Funtimes in the Children’s room. These sessions include music, movement, action songs, stories and craft.
The sessions are free and no bookings are necessary.
The Library has a ‘baby change’ room for convenience and many parents stay behind and chat after the session, sometimes in the children’s room and sometimes in the café.
Bilingual and multicultural events
Watch this space for bilingual and multicultural events for children of all ages. Languages featured to date are Japanese, Chinese, Te Reo Maori, Zulu, French, and Dutch.
I am always on the lookout for people from different nations to assist me in these one hour sessions. No experience is necessary as I work beside you through an easy format.
If you are interested in having a FUN hour while promoting your language and culture, please contact the Children's Services Librarian, phone +64 9 430 4206 or email email@example.com
Every year during the summer school holidays the library runs a Reading Programme which is designed for children of all ages.
The aim of the programme is to encourage children to keep reading throughout the school holidays to avoid a slump in their reading ability.
The programme runs over a 5 week period.
Children register at the beginning of the holidays when they are given a pack which includes a contract document, reading log and fun activity sheets.
Each child negotiates a goal with the librarian and signs a contract to this effect. The children read at home and keep a log of what they have read.
In the summer of 2010 - 11 this programme was opened to schools so that teachers could sign up children before the holidays. This was very successful and will be continued this year.
The programme ends with a prize giving and grand finale.
This programme is very popular with both parents and children.
Design your own library visit. The things we offer are:
- story reading
- library quizzes
- reader’s theatre
- music (with instruments)
- action songs
- library tours.
or use our space to do your own thing (bookings necessary). Either way we welcome children to visit Whangarei Library
