Whangarei District Council ratepayers and residents are entitled to free membership.
If you live outside the district you can join by paying an annual subscription.
Joining Whangarei Libraries
It is easy to join - choose from the options below.
In all instances you will need to visit any of our libraries (Whangarei Central, Kamo, Onerahi, Tikipunga or the Mobile Library bus) and bring ID such as driver's license or passport plus proof of your current physical address e.g: a bank statement or electricity bill.
Online: Complete our online enrolment form and get temporary membership which entitles you to reserve up to 2 items from our Library catalogue and checkout up to 4 items from our Libraries. We will email you a temporary Library membership ID which will expire after 2 weeks if enrolment is not completed.
To complete enrolment and pick up your Library card, visit any of our Libraries with your ID and proof of current address within 2 weeks.

Children and young people under 18 years need to have a guarantor to join the library.
Guarantors must be adult members of Whangarei Libraries who agree to take responsibility for, and to pay upon demand, all damages, fines, administration charges and replacement costs that are incurred as a result of the borrowers' failure to meet such obligations.
The guarantor must be present in the Library to sign the membership enrolment form. We can enrol the guarantor and young person up at the same time.
Out of District membership
If you live outside the Whangarei District you will be charged an annual subscription.
The initial cost is $60, which includes a $30 deposit that is refunded when you leave, if you have no charges or loan items outstanding. The other $30 is an annual subscription (not refundable).
You receive one Library card for the $60. If you want additional cards for other family members each additional card costs an initial $10, but will incur no further annual charges and is subject to the usual borrowing conditions.
The base cardholder pays $30 every year to renew the membership(s).
If they do not renew each year all the cards issued from their subscription will become invalid.
- You are responsible for all items borrowed on your library card, including items borrowed by other people using your card
- notify us immediately if you lose your card or if it is stolen
- return all items borrowed on your card by the due date in the same condition they were in when borrowed (except for fair wear and tear)
- agree to pay on demand all damages, fines, administration charges and replacement costs that are incurred as a result of failure to meet these conditions
- please tell us if your address, phone or email details change.
